History

The Faculty of Iran History is among the oldest research centers of the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies. Its establishment dates back to years before the Islamic Revolution. The initial core of the formation of the Faculty of History has its origin in the ‘‘Iranian Centre of Historical Researches’’ which was established in 1976 under the administration of Dr. Bahram Farahvashi. Moreover, there have been a Historical Studies section and an Association of History in the ‘‘Academy of Literature and Art’’ in which many famous researchers of history in universities in Tehran were members. Therefore, the Iranian Centre of Historical Researches and the Association of History which were later incorporated into ‘‘Institute of Cultural Studies and Researches’’ formed the initial core of ‘‘Faculty of History’’.

Before the Islamic Revolution of Iran, ‘‘Association of History’’ held a series of sessions and congresses of Iranian Researches and also several academic sessions with the cooperation of history professors in Iran. Today the large and enriched library of the Association of History forms a large part of the historical books of the library at the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies. The ‘’Faculty of History’’ inherits from the history section of ‘‘Iran’s Culture Foundation’’. This foundation was established in 1964. The History Group of this foundation began its research activities by correcting historical texts and publishing books. After the Islamic revolution, following the establishment of the Institute of Cultural Researches and Studies, the remnants of the History Group of Culture Foundation and the Iranian Centre of Historical Research constituted the initial base of the ‘‘Faculty of History’’. Now, this faculty consists of 3 research groups namely ‘‘Research Group of Social and Economic History of Iran’’, ‘‘Research Group of Intellectual and Cultural History of Iran’’ and ‘‘Research Group of Political History of Iran’’.

Objectives

• The promoting of the faculty on national and international levels, obtaining maximum cooperation and participation of researchers, academic members, organizations and academic associations in the field of history;
• The quantitative and qualitative development of social and group activities on national level with pivotal role of the ‘‘Faculty’’;
• Efforts for creating and accumulation of knowledge in required subjects of History;
• The specializing of the activities of the faculty members and determining the relation of the activities of the members with the annual research project and their action plan;
• Plan-Orientation on a large scale in the academic activities in the field of history with planning the required strategies and practical guidelines;
• The familiarizing the people of Iran and the world with the resources and backgrounds of the history and culture of Iran and Islam in order to endure the historical, national and religious identity;
• The recognizing of Iranian-Islamic civilization.

Scientific, Research and Educational Activities

• The carrying out more than 70 research projects;
• The conducting MA programs on «History of Islamic Iran» since 1989 and the PhD programs of «History of Science in Islamic Era» and «History of Iran after the Rise of Islam» since 2012.
• The improving critical and analytical and applicable research skills of history scholars in the field of Iranian history;
• The implementing individual and group projects on directing, advising, consulting and refereeing history theses;
• The participating in specialized history conferences and presenting papers, speeches;
• The publishing the journals of Tahqiqat-e Tarikh-e Ejtema’ee (Social History Research), Pajooheshnameh-ye Tarikh-e Ejtema’ee-Eqtesadi(Journal of Socio-Economic History) and Jostarha-ye Tarikhi (Historical Discussions).
